Waterford People photographer Paddy Dwan, was the recipient of €3000 in the fourth annual Ted & Mary O'Regan Arts Bursaries, towards compiling and exhibiting a photographic record of the river and its wildlife from Carrick-on-Suir to Waterford Harbour. ARTS BURSARY AWARDS ANNOUNCED

The winners of the fourth annual Ted & Mary O’Regan Arts Bursaries were announced last Friday 22nd Aug. His Worship the Mayor Jack Walsh and Anna Manahan presented the awards to the winners.

Reflecting the wide range of artistic activity in Waterford city and county, a total of forty five applications were received for this year’s awards, which went to contemporary dance artist, Jessica Sara Rowell, drama teacher, Jennifer Grangel, photographer, Paddy Dwan and musical theatre actress, Katie Honan.

Jessica Sara Rowell from Passage East is a former member of WYDmoves and an accomplished dance artist. An award of €4,000 will assist Jessica with the cost of taking up a place at the prestigious London Contemporary Dance School.

Another person associated with Waterford Youth Arts, Jennifer Grangel, is a Drama Therapy student at NCII. Jennifer’s award, also for €4,000, will assist with the fees for the remaining two years of her course, after which she hopes to teach drama and movement to young children with special needs. Jenny has taught drama with WYA over the last eight years and has directed a number of their shows.

Well known local photographer and arts activist, Paddy Dwan received a bursary for €3,000 to assist him with compiling an exhibiting a photographic record of a river journey from Carrick on Suir to Waterford Harbour. The journey will focus, primarily, on the wildlife of the River Suir and Waterford coast and will take place over the four seasons of the year.

The distinguished musical theatre actress, Katie Honan is the recipient of a special once off bursary for €4,000. This award, which was sponsored by the Waterford Pantomime Society (1984), will assist Katie with the cost of taking up a place in the theatre school at Liberties College in Dublin.

The Arts Bursary is the brainchild of a group of friends and colleagues of the late Ted and Mary O’Regan and was created to honour the couple’s invaluable contribution to the artistic and cultural life of Waterford. Launched in 2005, the bursary is financed by local arts organisations and statutory bodies as well as by the O’ Regan family and by friends and admirers of the much loved couple. Among the organisations who have contributed to the bursary are Waterford Youth Committee, Waterford City Council, Waterford County Council, Waterford City Enterprise Board, Red Kettle, Garter Lane Arts Centre, Spraoi, Theatre Royal and Waterford Youth Arts. Designed to assist local artists to pursue and advance their career in the arts, the Bursary is administered by a group of trustees from the local arts community and is distinguished by the patronage of Waterford playwright James Cheasty and actress Anna Manahan.
