INNER CITY WINS!Congratulations to the Inner City entry in the 2008 parade which won the overall St. Patrick’s day prize. Their entry was called Inner City Recyclers ‘Playing Our Part’ and was sponsored by Waterford City Enterprise Board. This was a great example of co-operation on the ground in the Inner city area with three different groups working together to create an entry for the parade and at the same time breaking down a lot of barriers and making new friendships. They also managed to get across the message of recycling and caring for our environment in a fun and novel way. Over 80 young people and adults were involved in the parade which had three sections – drama, dance and drumming. The drama side had great fun being mischievous and their ‘Rubbish people’ encouraged members of the public to throw rubbish on the streets only to be followed-up by ‘Recycling Police Dept.’ who were issuing fines on the spot. The drama group also had the novel inclusion of a beautiful Newfoundland dog which was followed by three “expert” dog poop cleaners. All the costumes were made from Recycled materials and were designed by Chris Nwoke and made by a group of volunteers from the three organizations involved. The costumes looked particularly well on the dancing troupe and the drumming group which was led by Mark Merriman of Torann. Well done once again to all involved and particularly the three main groups St. Brigids Family Support Unit, Mount Sion Information and Support Unit and Waterford Youth Arts. |
