WATERFORD
ATTACKED!
Waterford Youth Arts joined forces with Croydon
Youth Theatre (London), to present a fantastic piece of street
theatre at the 2008 Spraoi festival. They performed a piece
entitled The Rubbish Pirates, created and directed by Nicholas
Kavanagh of MooCow Theatre. The Cast was made up of
32 young people aged between 15 and 23 years. The show was
sponsored by the Environment section of Waterford City Council
and aimed to highlight the need for more recycling and, more
importantly, to reduce the amount of needless waste sent to
landfill sites.

the costumes for the piece were made from waste products and
recyclables, which were designed and created by Clare
Horgan and Nicholas Kavanagh.

THE RUBBISH PIRATES
Nothing left but thick black smog; mountain upon
mountain of waste. The earth’s inhabitants are nothing more
than a gang of scavengers. It’s the year 2060; a war has
ignited between the Fordrawtes and the Yordnocs, rival new-age
pirates. These one-time friends, now foes, are known and feared
as ruthless Rubbish Pirates. They rage through towns and cities
claiming waste mountains and slaves, who must sort the waste.
A portal has been discovered, making time travel possible. The
Fordrawtes and the Yordnocs have set sail for Waterford in the
year 2008, where they will raid our wheelie bins, skips and landfills,
transforming their findings into weapons and armour, for a glorious
battle. They will meet face to face in the city centre where only
one band of pirates will leave victorious. The
Rubbish Pirates was performed twice over the Spraoi festival.
