Capturing The Creativity of Young People

The Animals 2026
Client:
In The Animals by Sean Buckley and directed by Sinéad Hourigan, student teacher Sam walks into a youth custody unit with nothing but a stack of philosophy questions and the hope that thinking differently might change something. The young people he meets want nothing to do with it – until the conversations start to dig under their armour and expose the fear, anger and fragile hope they carry.
This powerful new play, written for National Theatre Connections, shines a light on education inside the youth custody system and the intense, often hidden challenges young people face as they try to imagine a life beyond its walls. It doesn’t offer easy answers – it asks what learning, responsibility and second chances might really look like when the stakes are this high.
