Ruth Flynn
Ruth holds an MA in Arts and a BA (Hons) in Visual Art, with a practice rooted in studio-based work, live performance, and socially engaged art. Alongside her work with Waterford Youth Arts, Ruth is a studio artist at GOMA, the Gallery of Modern Art, where creative practice is combined with delivering workshops for diverse community groups. Ruth has exhibited and performed work throughout Ireland and Europe. Ruth also works therapeutically with art, facilitating creative sessions for Aiséirí, supporting adults and adolescents in residential and secondary addiction treatment. This experience informs a sensitive, participant-centred approach to working with young people. Across all work with Waterford Youth Arts, Ruth’s practice prioritises accessibility, fun, creative confidence, and the belief that art can be a powerful tool for expression, wellbeing, and personal growth. --- Saturday Art Saturday Art Workshops at Waterford Youth Arts are led by visual artist Ruth Flynn and are open to children and young people aged 5–17. These workshops offer a fun, supportive, and inspiring space where young people are encouraged to explore their creativity, share ideas, and express themselves through art. Each session combines hands‑on art making with collaborative activities and drama games, helping participants warm up, build confidence, and connect with one another. Workshops balance group work with individual projects, allowing each young artist to develop their own creative voice at their own pace. Participants are introduced to age‑appropriate skills such as drawing, shading, perspective, and painting techniques, while being encouraged to experiment and take creative risks. A wide range of materials and processes are explored, including drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, illustration, and craft. The workshops place a strong emphasis on enjoyment, imagination, and self‑expression, supporting young people to develop artistic skills, creative confidence, and a lasting love of making art.
Julie Cusack
Julie has exhibited extensively throughout Ireland, including the Kilkenny Arts Festival, Royal Hibernian Academy, Mermaid Arts Centre, as well as the Irish Cultural Centre and Terrace Gallery in London. She was awarded the Artlinks Tyrone Guthrie Residency Award in 2018 and the Artlinks Bursary Award in 2013 and 2024. Julie’s work is represented in the OPW State Art Collection, and she is represented by Solomon Fine Art. Workshops This workshop is a relaxed and fun way for kids to explore their creative ideas through drawing, painting and other media. An emphasis on both individual and group projects will be encouraged throughout. Children will also get the chance to look at historical and contemporary works of art for inspiration and discover new ways of seeing. Feedback from all participants is welcome and will be used to guide the group forward at their own pace.
